For

Laverne Edwin Seckman, age 82, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 21, 2004

Mr. Seckman was born in East Liverpool on October 9, 1921, the son of the late Wilbur and Mabel Brooks Podewels Seckman and lived his entire life in this area.

He had worked at the former Crucible Steel in his earlier years. After that, he was employed as a Contractor for over 30 years and was part owner of the S & W Construction retiring in 1985. With his partner, he built hundreds of homes in the tri state area. After retirement, Mr. Seckman continued to build custom furniture and specialty pieces in his home workshop. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School, class of 1940. He was a veteran serving as a gunnery staff Sargent with the Army Air Corp during W.W. II in the Pacific Theater, during which time he married his wife Clara Jane Rohr Seckman on Thanksgiving Day in 1943. He was a longtime member of the Faith Community Church, which his company built.

Mr. Seckman had been active in Boy Scouts with his sons, spending many nights and weekends on Scout camp outings and projects. He was one of the founders and builders of the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department, of the thirty years he was a member, 20 of those were as Fire Chief. He enjoyed fishing, making many trips to northern Canada in the spring and in the fall he would hunt in western Canada, West Virginia, and several other western states, bagging deer, caribou, elk, moose and bear.. Over the years and was a Life member of the Tri-State Coon Club and the Tri-State Coonhunters and Sportsman Association. He was also a member of the Glenmoor American Legion Post 736. He and his wife Jane also traveled the country and around the world.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Daryl B. Seckman and his wife, Marjorie, and Randy D. Seckman and his wife, Cathy, all of Calcutta, Ohio; two granddaughters, Christina Seckman of Calcutta, Ohio and Andrea Seckman of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; a brother, Harry Seckman of Clearwater, Florida and a sister, Grayce Ilene Jackson and her husband, Ross, of East Liverpool, Ohio

In addition to his parents Mr. Seckman was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Margaret Tope.

Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 1:30 PM with Pastor Jeffrey Nutter, of the church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park where the Tri State Burial Group will accord full military honors.

The Family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Wednesday June 23, 2004 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Memorial Contributions may be made to Boy Scouts of America or to Faith Community Church.
