Maynard F. Coates of Pompey Court, Virginia Beach, a retired Field Engineer for General Instruments, died May 13, 2001 at Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Robert Lemuel Coates of Boston, Massachusetts, his brother Ralph Warren Coates of Sanford, North Carolina, his granddaughter April Wafler of Glendora, California and his first wife Patricia Coates of Virginia Beach.
Mr Coates was born July 31, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts and was the owner of Coates Television Service in Allston.
He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps in WWII and was assigned to B17s with the 447th Bomb GroupH, 8th AF and the 463rd Bomb Group H, 15th AF. He was shot down over Germany and was a prisoner of war.
Maynard loved life and always had a smile or a joke. He loved to go camping and traveled cross-country to visit friends and family. He was a member of several bowling teams.
He is survived by his wife Jennie Coates, sister, Mildred Lafko of Newton, Massachusetts, brothers, Edward Coates of Melbourne, Florida; Robert Coates of Epping, New Hampshire; Ronnie Coates of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Sons, David A. Coates, of Charlotte, North Carolina and Paul M. Coates of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Daughters Karen Fitch of Charlotte, North Carolina; Linda Asbell of Virginia Beach; Debbie Doss of Annapolis, Maryland and Angelique Coates of Blacksburg, Virginia. He had 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many friends.
Donations can be sent to the Cancer Society.
A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Kelly J. Burris, 11:00 a.m. Friday May 18, 2001 at Kempsville Baptist Church with internment to follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park. Altmeyer Funeral Homes Va. Beach Chapel is handling the arrangements.
