Sister Elizabeth Waters, VHM, a member of Mount de Chantal community of Sisters of the Visitation, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Wheeling. She was 84.

Sister Elizabeth was born in Roanoke, Va., May 29, 1917, the daughter of the late Michael Bernard and Mary Frances Crowley Waters.

A graduate of St. Andrew’s High School, Roanoke, and Nazareth Junior College, Nazareth, Ky., she received a B.S. in Nursing Education from Providence Hospital and the Catholic University of America; a B.S. in Public Health Nursing from the Catholic University; a certificate in nurse-midwifery from the Maternity Center Association, N.Y., and an M.S.W. from St. Louis University.

Sister Elizabeth made her first profession of vows as a member of the Medical Mission sisters in 1938. As a member of that community, she served at the Catholic Maternity Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico from 1944 to 1960; as a social worker at St. Vincent Hospital in Phiadelphia from 1960 to 1967; in Venezuela and Bolivia between 1969 and 1971; as director of a home health agency in Southern Pines, North Carolina from 1971 to 1973; and as program director of St. Rita’s Senior Center in Philadelphia from 1973 to 1975.

In 1980, she began the process of transferring from the Medical Mission Sisters to the Order of the Visitation and on Jan. 2, 1983, she pronounced her vows as a Sister of the Visitation at Mount de Chantal in Wheeling. At Mount de Chantal, she served as infirmarian for the students as well as for the Visitation Sisters, celebrating her golden jubilee in 1988.

In addition to her parents, Sister Elizabeth was preceded in death by two brothers, Most Rev. Vincent S. Waters, D.D., and John Waters, and two sisters, Grace Waters Smith and Rosalie Waters Driscoll. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends received 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25 at Mount de Chantal, 410 Washington Ave., Wheeling. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 8:45 a.m. Monday Nov. 26, in the Mount de Chantal chapel. Interment in the Mount de Chantal Cemetery. Arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff St., Wheeling.
