Sister Anna Wagner, a Sister of Saint Joseph, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at
Wheeling Hospital. Born August 8, 1916, to the late Herman and Angela Weiss
Wagner in Elm Grove, she ranked third in a family of seven brothers and six
After attending St. Vincent de Paul School and St. Joseph’s Academy, she
entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph on February 2, 1940,
where she joined her two sisters who were members of the community, Sisters
Jeanne Marie and Gabriella. Sister Anna received a B.Ed. degree in education
from Duquesne University and continued her education at West Liberty State
She served in education ministry throughout the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston
in schools including St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s Villa Kindergarten in
Fairmont, St. Joseph’s in Huntington, St. Mary’s in Clarksburg, St. Francis
Xavier in Moundsville, St. Francis de Sales in Beckley, All Saints in
Bridgeport, WV, Sacred Heart in Williamson and schools in
Wheeling that included St. Mary’s, Blessed Trinity, Sacred Heart, and Corpus
Christi. From 1980-1998, Sister Anna was in charge of the Altar Bread
Department at Mount Saint Joseph.
Sister Anna will be remembered throughout Wheeling and local nearby areas for
her craftsmanship and artistic ability. She, along with Sister Gabriella,
displayed many of their creations at the craft sale held during the annual
Spaghetti Dinner at Mount Saint Joseph.
Sister Anna is survived by six sisters: Sisters Jeanne Marie and Gabriella
Wagner of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Rita Wright of Georgia, Marie Kennedy and
her husband John of Kansas, Martha Ross and her husband Frank of Moundsville,
and Dorothy Fitzsimmons of Wheeling; four brothers: Herman Wagner of Michigan,
Jerome Wagner of Ohio, John Wagner and his wife Mary of Ohio, and Charles
Wagner and his wife Pat of Wheeling; a sister-in-law, Lynn Wagner of Louisiana;
and several generations of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from 1:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6,
2004, at Mount Saint Joseph, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, where Vigil
Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004, in the Mount Saint Joseph Chapel with the
Rev. Walter Buckius, SJ, as celebrant. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery in
the Sisters of St. Joseph section.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling
Foundation, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003. Funeral
arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, 14th and Eoff Streets, Wheeling.
